We take promises on faith. We have to. But what if the promise gets broken?
It’s an age-old story. Someone hires a contractor to build their home, and somewhere in the process, the builder stops working, stops showing up, and abandons the project. The hopeful homeowner is stuck with a half-finished house, which is about as useful as no house. The frustration is great because the homeowner hired the builder to make something very important, and the builder promised to do the work to the end. The break in trust is painful.
We’re all looking for someone or something to trust in. But we live in a day where words alone don’t seem to carry much weight. Like papers blown away by a gust of wind through an open window, so go the promises people and possessions make, assuring us that we can trust in them for what our souls desperately yearn for most.
The truth is, only God can satisfy us.
No labor of our hands nor ascent of our intellects can make the promises of God come to pass. Only God can do that, and we have to trust Him.
Faith is a gracious gift God gives His children so we might see His beauty and character. Just as a person might have surgery on his eyes enabling him to see the light and color, so the Spirit of God gives us eyes of faith. When life gets hard, God can seem so far away. But when our trust is fastened to the reality of Jesus taking our sins and giving us His righteousness, we can rest in this busy and noisy world, knowing we don’t have to go find Him. He has come to us through His son, Jesus.
God is not a flakey construction worker who stops in the middle of conforming us to Christ’s image. He always does what He says He will do. He will finish what He began (Philippians 1:6).
Because our faith is a gift from God, anchored in the work of God, we can be certain of His faithfulness to us. “He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification” (Romans 4:25), and nothing can take that away.
