Day 2

Established by Jesus

from the reading plan

Isaiah 49:6, Ephesians 2:1-13, Matthew 16:13-18, Hebrews 8:6-13, Hebrews 9:11-15, 1 Corinthians 3:11

Since 2015, He Reads Truth has maintained a singular mission: to be men in the Word of God every day. Seven years later, our community includes “Hes” from across the globe, but our mission hasn’t changed.

Reading Scripture together is the centerpiece of what we do at He Reads Truth. As we spend time as a community reading This Is The Church, we encourage you to start by reading the daily Scripture on your  own. Then join us here to engage and encourage one another as we respond to what we’ve read. Each day for this series, we’ll include a brief summary of the reading along with a prompt for conversation.

The Church was established by Jesus, is sustained by Jesus, and rests on Him as its foundation.

Discussion Question: In light of today’s reading, how can you live out the truth that we are the people of God?

Take time to reflect on your Scripture reading and today’s question. Share what you are learning with others in the community in the comments.

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, – Ephesians 2:8

We become the people of God by accepting the gift of Jesus, and in our faith, become a true child of God.

  2. Ryan K. says:

Because Jesus has secured for us an eternal redemption (Heb. 9:12), we can serve Him freely, doing the good works he created us to do (Eph. 2:10), without worrying about what might happen. We don’t need to worry whether we will be clothed or fed, whether we will be successful, or whether we will be liked, because we know how our story on earth ends. Because we are His people, He hears our prayer and speaks to us through the Word and Spirit; all we need to do is listen and obey our loving Father.

  3. Mark says:

“For we are his workmanship [ poema or poem ], created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Eph 2:9. And after receiving the amazing gift of grace, we get to walk into the light of day looking for all that call God has invited us into. As Henry Blackaby stated — “Find out where God is at work and join Him there”.

For me, living out the truth of Christianity is being more and more like Jesus everyday. Sharing my faith through example, being patient, forgiving and most of all loving. My basic driver personality struggles often with patience and humility. Starting each day in God’s word helps me keep what is important foremost in my day.

  6. Patrick L says:

When we think about living out the truth of being a people of God, we first have to realize WHY and HOW we are a people of God. This whole day’s reading can be summed up in Ephesians 2:13, “But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

It wasn’t our own doing that we drew near to Christ and THEN received forgiveness. We are very passive agents here and when we realize the grace and mercy that has been given to us, it should compel us to live our lives in a similar way to others.

  7. Brandon J. says:

I know it sounds obvious, but I think we need the reminder that no church is “our” church. Like my book says, “The Church was established by Jesus, is sustained by Jesus, and rests on Him as its foundation.” I’ve been in ministry for a number of years and it can be easy to think a particular ministry is “mine”. But it’s not about me. It’s all God’s, and I am just grateful to get to play a role.

Jesus is the one we build around, all of us. He is the great unifier. By His blood, we are all one. What a beautiful reminder this morning 🙂

  8. Jordan Headley says:

I’m stuck on the Ephesians 2:13 reminder But now in Christ Jesus, you who were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.” We not GET to be close to God. We get to live Life With God. Now I have to think, how can I live life with God and practice that.

  9. John N says:

How Can You Live Out The Truth That We Are The People Of God? Truth requires us discovering the truth about ourselves. We have to look deep inside daily, looking for sin. Oh, it’s there, you just have to look hard, for we become comfortable with who we are and if we are to become more like Jesus, then we have to walk in the light and shed any darkness within.

Today’s reading is a good reminder that I don’t have earn it. Saved by faith, not of myself but the free gift. I sometimes forget and start thinking I need to work instead of remembering that mans works are as filthy rags and that I need only to get out of the way and trust Christ to work through me. He is the root and I am the vine and by myself I can do nothing. The harder I try the more I fall on my face but when Christ is my focus and is the point of my day then I am throughly equipped for good works through the working of the Spirit of Christ.
