After you finish reading today’s Scriptures, come back and read the essay here to dig deeper into the ways we see this specific promise at work in our day’s reading. Then join your fellow Bible readers in the comments to reflect on and discuss what you’re learning!

Jesus was born to fulfill God’s promise to send One who would embody the name Immanuel, which means “God is with us” (Mt 1:23). He is God incarnate, the living and breathing example of His kingdom to the world. His disciples experienced the tangible presence of God with them, walking and talking in their midst.

Before He returned to heaven, Jesus promised to give a gift that would keep His presence with us always: the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is the way God dwells with us now. The Spirit intercedes for us, guides us according to God’s will, and calls us into deeper relationship with God.
