Day 1

The God Who Listens

from the reading plan

John 11:1-44, Proverbs 15:29, Matthew 7:7-11, 1 John 5:14-15

Though Scripture contains many written prayers, like those found in the book of Psalms, and many teachings on how to pray, like the parables and sermons in Jesus’s ministry, this reading plan focuses on the prayers offered to God in the narratives of Scripture. Each day we’ll read a narrative that includes a prayer from an individual or group. Their prayers vary in length, type, posture, purpose, and God’s response. The secondary passages explore how the rest of Scripture speaks to the themes demonstrated in the main reading.

While each account is different, every prayer recorded in Scripture teaches us about the unchanging God who invites us to speak to and hear from Him. These prayers model for us what it can look like to be in conversation with God. As you read, notice the posture and emotions present each day.

Reading Scripture together is the centerpiece of what we do at He Reads Truth. As we spend time as a community reading Prayers in Scripture together, we encourage you to start by reading the daily Scripture on your own. Then join us here to engage and encourage one another as we respond to what we’ve read in the comments.

Today is the first day of the community study on prayers in Scripture! What are you looking forward to in this reading plan? Share how we can pray for one another in the comments below.

I’m very thankful for the timing of this plan – I spent a lot of time considering my prayer life over the summer, having read Pete Greig’s book and completed his Prayer Course in our church small groups. I felt my prayer life was in the best place it had ever been. Then our son arrived late September and since then, my prayer life has been pretty much non-existent except “Please make him sleep.” We heard an encouraging sermon about prayer yesterday at church, and now this plan – I feel like God is preparing me to return to Him in prayer. Pray that that would happen each day of this plan.

  2. Luke says:

Toby, I am with you brother! I felt the exact same way after my boys were born. I read a book on prayer around that same time as well. Will definitely pray for you that your prayer life would be strengthened through this, as I just prayed for myself as well. I will say, cherish those moments when you can just hold him and say thanks to God, for those have been some of the sweetest prayers I’ve ever prayed! And then when you hear him pray for the first time, good luck holding back the tears!!! God bless

Great comments Toby and Luke. Also by coincidence ( or God’s intervention) my Pastor has started talking with a group of us at our regular bi-weekly breakfast gatherings. It is encouraging to learn how others talk to the Father and that it is OK to take the time whenever it strikes us ( Holy Spirit?) to take the time to pray. I very much look forward to starting my mornings with his study. Grace and peace brothers as we start this journey together.

Hey fellas! First time reading this and excited to join. I am happy to see some activity! Anyhow to Toby, I feel you dude. My little one is 18 months now and we still haven’t got a full night sleep. It does get better trust me, your body will adjust and the sleep does get better.

For me my prayers need to focus more on trusting the Lord and not my own understanding. I find I worry and stress so much about my son and struggle giving those worries over to Him.

    Hello!
Excited to get started on this study. Frankly I’ve been struggling with being in a dissonant funk for the last few months and could use sometime digging into the word as well as actively working on my prayer life.
Toby, I hear you man. Our daughter is just about 7 months old and especially early on, it felt really hard to have meaningful time of prayer with the Lord. Honestly, what got me through and continues to get me through right now is a combination of singing worship songs I know to her as well as thanking the Lord for this baby which my wife and I prayed for and he delivered. I’ll be praying for you dude, things will chill out in time

I am so thankful those who commented before me have been blessed with children. For me, my hopes and dreams have been pinned on a new job, for which I have searched 15 years. I search and pray and then fail and mourn and start the process all over again. Every year it has been harder and harder to tell whether God is saying “No” or “Not Yet.” I am hopeful through this series I will get discernment in this area.

I’m also in the new dad boat. My wife and I left our beloved community and moved to a new place right before he was born about 15 months ago. We are struggling with the isolation and loneliness of being in a new place, a new job, etc, but so grateful for our little boy. We know this place will not be our forever home, so we are back to praying and discerning what the next life step will be for us as a family and asking God what he wants for us.
