In this Names of God reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Rather than having our writers share their own reflections on these passages, we’ve instead provided research-rich content to aid in your study of each day’s featured name of God, including the background of the name(s), a brief explanation of the character of God emphasized by the name(s), and a reflection question to help you dig deeper into the text.

Refuge & Fortress

Machseh, Metsudah (Hebrew)

Description

When God’s people claim He is their refuge or fortress, they are saying He is a safe place in times of trouble. He will take care of them and protect them. King David uses “refuge” frequently to refer to God—a telling admission from the powerful, mighty king of all Israel who led victorious armies into battle. This name of God uses the image of finding safety and rest in a city or fortress to communicate the security God’s people have in Him.

Emphasis

God’s protection from external threats

Reflection

What do these names teach me about God?

This one is easy to understand being the hardships I faced and how, even in my darkest moments, I’d turn to God and plead. Though now, my understand if God is much stronger and I probably wouldn’t be so sad and angry, I still saw God as my last bastion of safety. Even more so now. I need to keep in mind that no matter the difficulty, I can always retreat into the safety of my Lord.

God you are my refuge. You have been with me in some of the hardest times in my life. You have always been there with encouraging and gentle words. You have comforted me, strengthened me, you have surrounded me. You have been a father to me, giving me a family, calling me “son” in who you are well pleased, destroying any signs of being an orphan. Thank you Abba for welcoming me into your family, as a father welcomes his newborn son into the world.

Day 12: Pretty sure these are the first names that we see God as characteristics through analogy. Refuge and fortress. In times of need, he protects. He always protects actually but especially in times of need. You struggling right now? Promise you God is protecting you. It might not feel like it, but I promise he has you in a stronghold, not letting go. Deep breathes and believe that. God is so powerful and our refuge and fortress. ⚒

  7. Ryan Miller says:

It’s not often that I think of God as my refuge. I think that’s because I don’t often think of myself as being under attack. However, I am constantly under spiritual attacks and need to learn to view God as my refuge from the world and my spiritual enemies!
