from the reading plan

Numbers 11:24-30, Psalm 51:10-13, John 4:19-24, John 14:15-26, Acts 2:1-4, Acts 10:44-48

In this Names of God reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Rather than having our writers share their own reflections on these passages, we’ve instead provided research-rich content to aid in your study of each day’s featured name of God, including the background of the name(s), a brief explanation of the character of God emphasized by the name(s), and a reflection question to help you dig deeper into the text.

Spirit
Ruach (Hebrew), Pneuma (Greek)

Description
The Old Testament contains many references to ruach, the Spirit of the Lord, which was the manifestation of God’s presence on earth. The New Testament uses pneuma for the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity.

In John 4, Jesus tells the woman at the well that God is spirit. He was referring to the time, which has now come, when the Spirit of the Lord would no longer reside in temples built by human hands. Instead, the Holy Spirit dwells inside those who believe in Jesus.

Emphasis
The non-incarnate, or non-physical, presence of God on earth

Reflection
What does this name teach me about God?

  1. Greg says:

This name and associated passages remind me that God isn’t sequestered to a place or a time. Rather, he is in me. By living a good, righteous life, abiding by his commandments, I show him discipline and love. He loves me and resides in me and I must never forget that. My actions and words have to honor him. I am the temple now and must not desecrate that sacred space.

  2. Tim Bowditch says:

The Spirit is possibly the most mysterious and interesting name for God as it suggests that the unseen is real. Our love for our family and spouses is very real but it is unseen, this is a helpful analogy for the reality of the unseen God who lives and dwells within us.

  3. Ryan Orndorff says:

God is with us in spirit. His presence is all around us and in us daily. Knowing this helps to keep me accountable and try harder not to fall short of the glory. Stay true to his calling and what it means to be a Christ follower.

  4. Joshua H. says:

The spirit that dwelled in the temples and holy places of old now is in believers! It’s an identifying mark of a Christian.

  5. Kevin says:

Day 9: I’m really glad that this is a word we use to call upon the name of God. The non-physical presence of him on earth everyday. In good times and bad, he is with us. Though we cannot see, we believe he is here. Until we have the physical God with us, I’m stoked we have him in spirit within us. Use that to your advantage! ⚒

  6. Ryan Miller says:

God has made him self the most accessible person outside of our own self. If we can deny our self we can relate with the Spirit of God anytime, anywhere. God loves us so much that he will never leave us and wants us to draw near to Him.

I need to believe this truth more. I need to learn to deny myself, clear my mind, and focus my time and attention on the Spirit of God Living inside of me.
