Lord of Armies

Yahweh Tsebaoth, Yahweh Elohim Tsebaoth, Elohim Tsebaoth (Hebrew)

Description

The Hebrew root word tsaba, or “a gathering of people,” is frequently used in the Bible to describe armies preparing for war. When paired with the name of God in Yahweh Tsebaoth, it reveres Him as being over hosts of angelic armies who gather in His name and serve at His command. All creation is subject to the LORD of Armies. “LORD of Hosts,” “God of Armies,” and “LORD God of Armies” are versions of this name.

“LORD of Armies” most frequently appears in the Minor Prophets, especially in Malachi, where almost half of the verses in the book contain this name in some form. During the time of the prophets, the people of God were living in exile in Babylon. They faced daily reminders of the presence and power of the enemy armies keeping them in captivity. They called out to God as the LORD of Armies, whose vast angelic armies could deliver them from trouble. LORD of Armies is a name that assures us of the power of our mighty God.

Emphasis

The security, power, and strength of God in the face of His enemies

Reflection

What does this name teach me about God?

Lord of Armies/Lord of Hosts — This name is a great reminder. A great reminder of the unseen spiritual realities of our world. I do not consider activity in the spiritual realm nearly as often as I should. There are battles being waged in this realm. People and their decisions are being influenced by realities in this domain. There is an appeal to be made to the God of this realm regarding all of the above. And we should pray not only to the God of this arena, but for ourselves and the people around us who are often so unaware and even oblivious to it. But we serve the God who is Lord over the heavenly host. Who has angels at His command to do batttle, to carry out His will, and to minister to those who love and serve Him.

  2. Tim Bowditch says:

Lord of Armies is a powerful name for God as I am constantly reminded through news and media that our world has been broken by war and human conflict. He is a conquerer and can overturn any evil.

  3. Ryan Orndorff says:

“The God of angels armies is always by my side”
NO battle is too great for my God to overcome.

  4. Joshua H. says:

  5. Kevin says:

Day 8: Lord of armies. I’ve always heard this and not really known too much about it. How sweet it is to have a legit army on the side of the Lord. He’s got his angels ready to pounce and fight for him and for us. He has the power and control over them. Don’t just remember we have God behind us, which should probably be enough, but also remember we have an army on our side. ⚒

  6. Ryan Miller says:

I like how this name was used in prayers to God but his people. It’s a reminder that God has everything that we need. He wants to take care of us. We need to pray and seek the God of Armies for the deliverance that we need.

  7. Coale Jordan says:

Knowing our God as the Lord of Armies demands is to fear and respect him. He is all powerful and holds all authority, and his name will be praised among the earth. We should remember this in what we bring to God. Are we honoring him with our lives as living sacrifices?
This names is twofold, however. As children of God and co-heirs with Christ, we can come before the throne of our God and have his love and support at our back. He is for us and he has the host of heaven at his disposal to give us life and life to the fullest, according to his will and glory!

“FAITH” The Lord of the armies remains me of the shield of armor, in Ephesians 6: 10-20.
As we Trust in the Lord, we will believe the outstretched right arm of protection. Keep his Love in your hearts and fight off all evil though his son!
