Day 5

Holy One

from the reading plan

Psalm 78:40-43, Psalm 89:15-18, Isaiah 41:12-20, Revelation 4:1-8

In this Names of God reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Rather than having our writers share their own reflections on these passages, we’ve instead provided research-rich content to aid in your study of each day’s featured name of God, including the background of the name(s), a brief explanation of the character of God emphasized by the name(s), and a reflection question to help you dig deeper into the text.

Holy One
Qadosh (Hebrew)

Description
The Hebrew word qadosh is translated “set apart as holy.” It can be used in a general sense to describe places, objects, and people who have been set apart for religious purposes. But as a name, Qadosh, or “Holy One,” describes God as one who is set apart from His creation, from all pagan gods, and from everything else because of His perfection. This name works like a double-edged sword: it reminds us that God is perfectly holy in every way, and it reminds us that we are not. The distinction of being the Holy One belongs to Him alone. This name exalts God above all others in His holiness.

Emphasis
The righteousness and holiness of God

Reflection
What does this name teach me about God?

  1. Joshua H. says:

The holiness of God is a reminder that he is holy and that we (and other gods we put in his place) aren’t.

  2. Tim Bowditch says:

Because there is no one like our God, we can rest assured that He is worthy of our praise, prayers and attention. We need to give him reverence as He is holy and we are being made holy.

  3. Greg says:

This name makes me sad. He is holy and I feel lacking. I want to do right by him and live a holy life but I fall short in my sin. Though I confess and am genuinely sorry, I still find new ways to sin and start the cycle over. At the same time I know this somewhat what the Lord wants. He wants a willing heart of someone who will fail time and time again and get up over and over trying to do right be him while correcting his sin. I’ll never stay down and I’ll always try because of what he’s done for me and all he’ll do for me.

  4. Ryan Orndorff says:

God exalts all other things in heaven and on earth. Any situation we find ourselves in it is important to remember He is the only thing that stands above. He is Qadosh.

  5. Kevin says:

Day 5: Holy one. Set apart as holy. A great and hard reminder of our imperfection as people, but encouraging knowing the pureness of God. Set apart from all other pagan gods. Glad to know our God is THE ONLY GOD. We serve the most powerful! The HOLY! Love it. ⚒

  6. Ryan Miller says:

It seems like in the context of most of these passages, God was reminding Israel that he would come through even when it didn’t look like it at the time. The Holy One of Israel is a reminder that God is just and that He will reward faith and destroy the wicked in His timing.
