Description
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He told them to address God as “our Father” (Mt 6:9). When He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus cried out, “Abba, Father,” using personal and relational names for God (Mk 14:36). Abba is an Aramaic word, from the Hebrew Ab, for “father.” Pater is the Greek word used for “father.”
These are deeply familial names when used to address God. Belief brings us into a close yet respectful relationship with God, the holy Creator of all things. Father is a reverential yet personal name for God.

This face of God reminds me that God has called us back or is calling us back from a foreign place, like the father in the parable of the prodigal son. As a father God is loving, caring, and firm with his sons. I think it’s important to remember that God strengthens his sons through righteous trial. Not as punishment, but to call us as men, as his sons, higher. To bring us closer. To seek his wisdom. To enjoy his teachings. Just as we would with our earthly fathers.
God’s love is like that of a father. Unwavering, unconditional, and unlimited. In times of doubt, I think we as men forget that his love is constant, that he is there, and that his love sustains.

This reflection continues to make me realize how God wants a personal connection with us. He isn’t some distant thing on a mountain looking down at ants. He’s your dad, there to pick you up when you fall and talk to you when you want to. It’s so different than what I was used to in the past but I’m happy that God and I are closer than before.
