Day 17

Father

from the reading plan

Deuteronomy 32:1-6, Psalm 68:4-6, Jeremiah 3:19–22, Mark 14:35-36, Romans 8:14-17, Galatians 4:1-7

In this Names of God reading plan, we are learning more about God by studying the names given to Him in Scripture. Rather than having our writers share their own reflections on these passages, we’ve instead provided research-rich content to aid in your study of each day’s featured name of God, including the background of the name(s), a brief explanation of the character of God emphasized by the name(s), and a reflection question to help you dig deeper into the text.

Father

Ab (Hebrew), Pater (Greek)

Description

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He told them to address God as “our Father” (Mt 6:9). When He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before His arrest, trial, and crucifixion, Jesus cried out, “Abba, Father,” using personal and relational names for God (Mk 14:36). Abba is an Aramaic word, from the Hebrew Ab, for “father.” Pater is the Greek word used for “father.”

These are deeply familial names when used to address God. Belief brings us into a close yet respectful relationship with God, the holy Creator of all things. Father is a reverential yet personal name for God.

Emphasis

The personal, familial, and intimate name for God

Reflection

What does this name teach me about God?

  1. Sam McLelland says:

This face of God reminds me that God has called us back or is calling us back from a foreign place, like the father in the parable of the prodigal son. As a father God is loving, caring, and firm with his sons. I think it’s important to remember that God strengthens his sons through righteous trial. Not as punishment, but to call us as men, as his sons, higher. To bring us closer. To seek his wisdom. To enjoy his teachings. Just as we would with our earthly fathers.

God’s love is like that of a father. Unwavering, unconditional, and unlimited. In times of doubt, I think we as men forget that his love is constant, that he is there, and that his love sustains.

This reflection continues to make me realize how God wants a personal connection with us. He isn’t some distant thing on a mountain looking down at ants. He’s your dad, there to pick you up when you fall and talk to you when you want to. It’s so different than what I was used to in the past but I’m happy that God and I are closer than before. It boosts me up whenever we talk.

Our God is the Heavenly Father. Calling God father brings a different kind of love and feeling into my relationship with Him. It makes me feel so close and like I’ve known Him from the beginning of my life.

  4. Joshua H. says:

A father is one who loves no matter the circumstances. God does the same.

  5. Kevin says:

Day 17: Father. A personal name for God. A name we can use to feel his closeness and describe his power and authority over us, but also his ability to be our papa. One we can confide in. One we can look up to and chase after. ⚒

  6. Ryan Miller says:

God wants me to want a relationship with Him. He isn’t merely interested in me trying hard to obey Him. He loves me and wants to have a relationship with me!
